The city's winter festivities traditionally draw hundreds of thousands to Edinburgh and feature the iconic Big Wheel, ice skating and Christmas markets in Princes Street Gardens, including a Highland Village Christmas Market and a German Market.
Interactive venues give children the opportunity to play with snow and ice with games such as Jenga and Snow Shy, the snow equivalent of a coconut shy.
The ever popular German Market (located adjacent to the Royal Scottish Academy on Princes Street) boasted a fine selection of hot and cold food and drinks and gifts. The creamy hot chocolate is wonderful and helps to ward off the cold!
Other Christmas activities in November and December include storytelling in the Magical Christmas Tents, the Norwegian Advent Carol Concert at St Giles' Cathedral, an outdoor Nativity Carol Service, Santa Weekend and The Great Scottish Santa Run.
The Highland Village Christmas Market is located on the upper level of East Princes Street Gardens. It sells local food, drink and gifts from all over Scotland.
An Ethical Christmas Fayre is also held in Princes Street/Castle Street and has a range of stalls selling the very best in fair trade, ethically sourced, organic and environmental products including food & wine, fashion, jewellery and virtual gifts.
