The city’s festivities, which traditionally draw hundreds of thousands to the iconic Big Wheel, ice skating and Christmas markets in Princes Street Gardens, included a children’s ice rink, an ice gallery with an ice bar serving hot chocolate, bungydome and slide. There was also a Highland Village Christmas Market and a German Market.
The Winter Wonderland Ice Rink had two ice rinks, one exclusively for under-7s. The main ice rink celebrated its 11th anniversary.
The interactive venue gave children the opportunity to play with snow and ice with games such as Jenga and Snow Shy, the snow equivalent of a coconut shy.
The ever popular German Market (located adjacent to the Royal Scottish Academy on Princes Street) boasted a fine selection of hot and cold food and drinks and gifts. The creamy hot chocolate was wonderful and helped to ward off the cold!
Other Christmas activities in November and December included storytelling in the Magical Christmas Tents, the Norwegian Advent Carol Concert at St Giles’ Cathedral, an outdoor Nativity Carol Service, Santa Weekend and The Great Scottish Santa Run.
The Highland Village Christmas Market was located on the upper level of East Princes Street Gardens. It sold local food, drink and gifts from all over Scotland.
An Edinburgh Ethical Christmas Fayre was held in a marquee on Castle Street and had over 20 stalls selling the very best in fair trade, ethically sourced, organic and environmental products including food & wine, fashion, jewellery and virtual gifts.
