Clubbing is popular the world over, but especially so in Scotland's fun-loving capital city.

Edinburgh has a vibrant club scene with venues to suit every taste. These range from the upmarket and sophisticated where the beautiful people hang out to energetic party joints where you can hit the floor to the sound of some of the best DJs around and show off your smooth moves.

Most clubs open late, usually from around 10 or 11pm, and run well into the wee small hours, typically 3am.

The City Nightclub

The City is one of Edinburgh's newest and most stylish nightclubs and reckoned by many to be the best. You could bump into anyone there, including film stars and the rich and famous.

Espionage

Espionage is a very popular spy-themed club. It has four bars each with different music styles. Popular with just about everyone from tourists to locals to students. Free entry.

Lava and Ignite

Lava and Ignite is slightly further out from the city centre, but a recent £¾ million upgrade has propelled it into one of the hottest venues around. Popular with students.

Location: 3 West Toll Cross - Up Lothian Road from Princes Street and on right before the road forks.

Liquid Room

The Liquid Room is both a club and live music venue. It is fairly small and can get very busy. Popular with students and others out to party the night away.

LULU

Located below the Tigerlily Boutique Hotel in George Street, Lulu is a cool, chic upmarket joint with comfortable surroundings and nice range of eclectic music. Prices to match.

Recently refitted, Stereo is extremely popular with students and the younger set.

Opal Lounge

Chill out in the Opal Lounge, one of the most fashionable places in town. Frequented by the upmarket set, so don't expect this place to come cheap. When the MTV Awards came from Edinburgh a couple of years ago this was the venue for the after show shindig.
